WHO WE ARE

Our Roots

Here at SWAFAA, we are proud to be involved in everyday efforts to improve the lives of our flight attendant workforce, on-the-job work priorities, negotiations, and contractual enforcement. We are a flight attendant grassroots organization leading in good faith to provide through our members: combined interests, industry-leading wages, contractual protections, and most importantly industry-leading bargaining agreements. By fighting for legislative improvements and bargaining for fairer labor agreements, we continuously strive to raise work standards, industry-leading pay, and most importantly improve the quality of life for all of our members. Remember here at SWAFAA everyone has a voice.

OUR PROMISE TO YOU

Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants are leading this effort. After other organizing drives fell short of their promises or stalled out, we decided it was time to seek and form our own union. It has been years since our last contract was renewed and negotiations with TWU and the company have continuously stalled leaving flight attendants frustrated. Management and times have changed, and we need change. This is a Flight Attendant-led campaign, and we’re grateful to have hard-working members on our side to win the union we need and truly deserve to make sure Southwest Airlines holds true to its values and revives the spirit of Southwest again; making us the industry-leading legendary airline that we've always known Southwest to be. We want to claim our rights to be a part of shaping our experience at work just like our pilots have done for decades. It’s a new day at Southwest Airlines

OUR MEMBERS DECIDE, YOU HAVE A VOICE

Only Southwest Airlines Flight Attendants can decide what’s negotiated. Nothing will change unless we as Southwest Flight Attendants want it to change. It’s our union and our choice as Flight Attendants to bargain in good faith.

FAQ

Home: FAQ

WHERE CAN I SIGN AN AUTHORIZATION CARD?

You can sign a SWAFAA authorization card in non-work areas. Specifically, non-work areas include:

  • In the crew lounges where Flight Attendants relax and socialize with their co-workers

  • Shuttle vans to and from a layover hotel or employee parking lot

  • Anywhere while on a layover

  • On the concourse, before you report to your assigned gate

  • Any place where you are not engaged in work duties

WHAT DOES THE RAILWAY LABOR ACT DO?

Under the RLA, an employer is prevented from:

  • Surveillance of organizing activities

  • Threatening to sue in an effort to suppress support

  • Terminating/disciplining or threatening to terminate/discipline employees for supporting the union

  • Barring employees from soliciting cards or membership during non-work time and in non-work areas as long as the Company does not have a specific and non-discriminatory policy banning all solicitation (a non-work area generally includes break rooms, crew lounges, anywhere where work is not performed)

  • Asking about confidential union matters (i.e. whether or not the employee signed a card)

  • Asking about whether the employee supports the union

  • Threatening to discontinue existing benefits

  • Promising to give employees promotions, raises, or other benefits in exchange for voting against the union

  • Endorsing one union over another

  • Preventing an employee from voting

  • Knowing how the employee voted

  • Prohibiting an employee to wear his/her pin on the job as long as it does not contain a controversial statement or violate company policy or uniform requirements

  • Preventing an employee from handing out leaflets on their own time in non-work areas

  • Preventing an employee from discussing the prospect of a union while at work as long as it does not interfere with work duties (an employee should only hand out representation cards during non-work time in non-work areas)

     45 U.S.C. § 152 (Third), (Fourth); 29 C.F.R. § 1205.2.

HOW CAN I HELP BE A PART OF SWAFAA

In order for change to be implemented, once a majority of your coworkers have signed a union authorization card, the cards are submitted to the National Labor Relations Board to request a union election. This part can take several weeks as the Board decides on an election date and determines who at your workplace can vote. If a majority of your coworkers vote YES at your election, your employer now has to recognize your union and bargain with you and your coworkers.
